Clematis problem

I've got 2 clematis that have severe yellowing of their leaves. They are still growing and the leaves aren't dropping off but I can't figure out what's wrong. I have fed them and they've gotten plenty of water - maybe too much 'cause it's been wet here this spring. Any idea what is wrong with them and what to do about it?

Yardsharing and Seed Angels - We need you!

We have a couple projects going that don't need funding - just participants!

The first is hyperlocavore.com. Hyperlocavore is a yardsharing community - built to support people in the practice of creating 'yardsharing' arrangements to grow food together.

Many people want to grow food but they lack one or two of these four things:
-time
-space
-skills
- physical strength

Forming a yardsharing group with your friends, neighbors, family or with your religious communities is easy - and free! You can set up a 'seeking yardshare' group for your area (like Chicago, South Side) or a private group for your own yardshare "Grandma's Backyard Garden"

CSAs are filling up fast. Community gardens have waiting lists. Food is getting more and more expensive.
Find some people and start growing together!

The other project we've started is The Great Let's Get Growing Seed Share.
We are asking experienced gardeners to become 'seed angels,' to adopt a newbie gardener and send them some garden seeds! I have sent four newbie gardeners enough seed that each of them will have huge beautiful edible gardens this summer. It's easy - it cost me less than 4 dollars to get four gardens going!

If you are an experienced gardener we need you to become a seed angel!
If you are a newbie food grower - sign up!

It's FREE
hyperlocavore.com

If you think these are good ideas please help us get the word out to your communities! Blog it, tweet it, share it!

I live in Arizona, and grow in planters outside in winter. My broccoli gets to a couple small heads about the size of a golf ball, and goes to seed without making the big crowns you see in the store. Why is it doing this? Because of the short day? They grow it in winter anyway elsewhere. It's alot of effort for failure.

Green thumb as a personal-energy topic?

Hi. I'm in western Canada and have been gardening most of my life. Veggies, small fruit (berries), tree nuts & fruit, ornamental trees and shrubs, native trees, flowers, etc. I know a lot about "90% perspiration and 10% inspiration", and also about learning principles and techniques from other people, from books, and from trial & error. Having said this, ...

I wonder what any and all of you may think about a "green thumb" being related to personal energy? A quality within the gardener as a person??

Please let me know your thoughts and observations...

Fuchsia Care?

Hey
so i just bought this amazing, big potted Fuchsia plant at the nursery and we got it home and put it outside in a shady spot on the porch. It started to get a little wilty. So we fed it some food and watered it. It perked up for a few days then went back to wilty. we thought maybe it was to cold so we brought inside, and it seems to like it better but still isnt looking very vibrant. What does it like as far as watering frequency? should we let it dry out a bit before watering it or does it like constant moistness? how much/little sun? humidity? any body have any experiance to share?
thanks

Hi. I am new to the tribe.
All of my house plants are infested with fungus gnats. I am now keeping the soil dry (only watering when the plants really need it) and it is helping only a little. Does anyone know how to get rid of these bugs without using chemicals? Any suggestions would be wonderful. Many thanks!

thai chili pepper disease?

Hi all, I have two potted thai chili pepper plants. I've grown them from seeds and they are lovely happy plants! Recently though, I've noticed that large portions of their leaves have been dying. They start to turn brown from the tips and there are sometimes white spots on them and they end up shriveled by the end and dried out.

I've looked all through the plants, but I don't see any sign of obvious pests feeding on them or affecting them. This leads me to believe it could be some sort of disease or something? It could be the way I'm caring for them, but I've never seen leaves do this before so I'm assuming that's not it. I water them regularly and don't over-water them either. And they are still giving off healthy peppers. And the leaves that aren't affected are pretty green and healthy.

I've posted some pictures in my photo album of the whole plant sections and also some slightly fuzzy shots of individual leaves and what they are doing.

My one other thought and observation is that it is happening in the back of the plant. Meaning the area of the plant that is least exposed to light...maybe that's the problem?

Any help you could offer would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

ok so i dont have a garden in the ground its more of a nice size patio filled with potted plants...well recently ive had some major issues with little centipedes in almost all of my plant pots...they seemed to be causing or at least i think, some of my plants to die off (their are litterally hundreds when u turn the soil a bit) i used a few pesticides which i really dont like to do and nothing has worked...anyone have any ideas on what else i could try? i really dont have a problem with bugs but centipedes meet one of my icky spots..(they traumatized me as a boy)

In my album I have posted three pics of one of my Victoria 'Longwood Hybrid" I took yesterday. The largest leaf is 33 inches with a 3/4 inch lip. My lily, at work. Flametree Barbeque, Animal Kingdom.

Neat tricks?

I don't know about everyone else, but I've found that the more I talk to gardeners, the more cool little tricks I learn. I'm throwing the net out here, see what I catch. I'll start.

velcro for staked tomatoes.

plant corn inside to get a head start (corn likes warm soil to germinate, but will grow in cooler soil)

wide row planting to increase the amounts of vegetables.

Help in PDX: Need hay bales!

Hi folks, I'm going to be in need of hay bales to provide additional seating in my back yard to then become mulch for fall. I need to get hay bales for this coming Saturday and here's where I'm in need:
1. Close location for getting bales ( I don't drive so I'll probably be carting them if I can't manage a person with a truck)
2. Finding out about cost.
3. If anyone knows of someone who''l be making a shopping run, if I can go in on some with them.
My location is close to Franklin High School off 58th and SE Division. Any help will be gratefully appreciated--thanks in advance!

New to your tribe--with a question

Hi All, I just joined your tribe so that I could ask you a question. I live in Hawaii, on Oahu, and I was just shopping in 2 different stores looking for plant saucers. All I could find were those junk clear ones that crack in 5 minutes (okay, I tend to exaggerate). What I'm looking for are the green plastic ones, made out of the same material as pots.

So I looked online and I could not find any. Are they not longer being made? Can this really be true? Does anyone know where I can find plant saucers online? Or, better yet, on Oahu?

Thanks for your help.

I bought this annual stuff without tags yesterday, silly me. The green house called it annual pulmonaria but it looks nothing like the perennial shade loving lungwort. It actually resembles phlox more than anything. I got both white and a lovely, clear light blue. They told me it gets bushy but not how tall it grows. Does anyone know anything about this stuff? How big does it get? How much water does it need?
What is this thing growing in my pot?

I planted some broad leaf sage seeds a couple months ago. After a few weeks I transplanted some sprouts to a new pot, and one of the sprouts wasn't doing very well -- the stalk had broken and it was pretty much dead. Then it came back, and then it got HUGE. You can see the photo with the two normal sage plants and the one giant mutant plant. The leaves on the mutant plant are smooth, and it really doesn't look like a sage plant, but I could SWEAR it started as a sprout like all the other ones. The stalk, though much stronger, still has dents in it where it broke.

Does anyone have any idea what this is? Is it sage? Or am I tending to a giant freaky weed?

If you don't have much garden space, or for physical reasons, can't have a big garden but love it or miss it, think about joining a CSA. The benefits include healthy eating, excersize (if they allow you to come and help), reducing farming emissions and pollutants like chemical fertilizer (ask the farmer what his/her practices are in this regard), supporting local economy, an education on what it means to be a farmer today.

We have a few thistle patches (sounds like a swear, doesn't it?) around here. One just sprung up amoungst my raspberries last year. So, now I am going to move the raspberries (needed to get them in line anyway) and cover the patch with a tarp. Anyone got any other ideas as to how one can get rid of the things? I've chopped off their heads and poured extra strong vinegar down their throats, cut them off just under ground, and a few other methods that haven't worked. I won't use round up.

Or should I go to a nursery? Should I just use regular potting soil, and what is good spacing for garlic, one every 3x3 or 5x5? Thanks!

question about rosemary

I planted an indoor herb garden about a week ago -- basil, sage, thyme and rosemary to start. Three of the four pots have sprouts, but so far no action on the rosemary. How long do rosemary seeds usually take to sprout? Do they tend to be more difficult to grow that the other three?

Greetings Everyone...

I am not really sure what happened...
I had these two beautifully full rubber plants. They were growing so tall and thriving, though all of a sudden, leaves started falling offf of them. One did not make it :-( and one is just barely getting by. I did not change anything in there lifestyle.
Anyone have experience with this...
would love to hear thoughts etc...

Does anyone have a method of getting rid of nematodes other than letting the garden go fallow for over a year or solarizing (which does not sound like it will work in winter). The problem is I have a tree in the front yard that I suspect is infested and its roots have gone to all of the beds in the front. I can't seem to get much to grow for very long before it gets stunted. I sent in a soil sample and they said nematodes were very high in the soil. Is it possible to treat a tree?
Thanks anyone for any suggetions!!

one of my oldest, most precious plants has scale (bugs), i've had this problem before with a ficus and spent countless hours with rubbing alcohol and a Q-tip removing them one by one. and they'd return ;and this carried on for a long time, and i tried neem oil, which didn't rid my plant of these nasty buggers, and my ficus died. i've had this little succulent-type plant for a decade now,and the scale has been around for about a year. does anyone have any ideas for getting rid of scale in a non-toxic way? thanks.

I'm bringing my mint in pots (planted this year) inside for the rest of the summer. I've been battling scorching sun on the porch, and now the plants are long and thin. Actually all of my edibles will come in. Will cutting them back, and moving them inside allow a fuller growth? I've set up a great window spot that will allow protection from most of the scorching Houston heat.

indoor house plants and ants

help! ants have come into my house and are making nests in my house plants!

some people elsewhere have suggested using powdered cayenne, or borax and sugar, or ground cloves to control ants outside, but i need to know if I can use those inside on house plants... can i directly apply these materials to in my house plant pots to make the ants pack up and leave? i don't want to water my plants too much (as a way to encourage the ants to leave) for fear my plants will rot.

i'm looking for anything i can add to water, sprinkle in the pots, or spray onto the plants to make these ants leave. any indoor experience anyone?

thanks all

I have a ginormous, healthy, wonderful spider plant. It's beautiful and I love it! The thing is that it's sprouting mini-baby spiders. I'm assuming that's how it reproduces, but I don' tknow how to get them to take root. I'd like to plant them all, if that's possible--any suggestions?

Thank you!

How long do these things take to bulb? They are now HUGE! About three feet tall and starting to flower, and it's been a year already. Is there any hope for them?

I heard that those bags made to capture the beetles actually attracts them to your yard and can make matters worse.

I stumbled on a dream of a garden last week that was going to get bulldozed. It included a ton of gorgeous rose bushes of all varieties. I took clippings of about 3 dozen of them, put a root hormone on their bottoms and put them in potting soil. This was 3 days ago and it seems like 90% of them are doing really well, some are not happy with their new condition. I'm keeping the soil moist... which seems to mean watering them twice a day. They are currently living in window boxes on my dining room table. (indirect sunlight) I want them to get the best possible chance at making it... these rose bushes were sooo gorgeous! Is there anything I can be doing better for them?

Thanks in advance!

I know bigger would probably be better (in the ground might be best) but is there a minimum size recommended? Anyone have personal experience with say a 5-10 gal pot? I'll be growing cherry and big boy each in their own pot.

Bell Peppers

I give up. Why are my bell peppers dying?

I bought 4 of the regular size bell pepper and 6 gyspies. They are planted in the sun. I have fertilized the soil with vegetable food. They get regular water, not too much not too little.

They grew great for a month, even started developing fruit. I added a bit more fertilizer (as directed on the box). We also had a few days of rain, and within a week or two several of the gypsies were wilting. Most of them are now dead. They wilted, then dried and died within 3 days. It happened so quickly it seemed unnatural. A few days ago the regular bell peppers started wilting and I fear they have only a day or two to survive.

What is wrong with them and is there anything I can do to help?

moldy potplants

Hi!
I have a problem with some of my plants indoors. The soil or clay-granulate I keep them in is often mouldy at the surface. It doesn´t bother the plants, but it bothers me. Do I give them too much water? What else than scraping off can I do to get rid of the jucky mould? It´s white, btw. And it seems to affect succulents, not the other plants beside them. Some pots stand by the window, some high on a shelf, some get direct sun and some don´t. Hm. Mysterious. Please help.

thank you

There is No More Time

www.countercurrents.org/cc-mar...l040305.htm

By Lucinda Marshall
04 March, 2005
Countercurrents.org

All evidence suggests that our lives and that of our planet are in grave
peril. If we are to survive, we must immediately dismantle the forces of
greed and power that are destroying our lives in the toxic pursuit of
empire. It is our refusal to face the realities of global warming and our
continued illegal use of Depleted Uranium that are the true terrors of our
time. Our governments and the corporate empires they defend must be
compelled to cease and desist from all forms of violence against our earth
and its inhabitants, to work towards mitigating the damage done and to
begin creating a livable future.

The environmental imperative of our situation cannot be ignored. The impact
of global warming is accelerating. Levels of carbon dioxide (the main cause
of global warming) have risen abruptly in the last two years. The Arctic is
warming twice as fast as the rest of the world and its polar ice cap has
shrunk up to 20% in the last three decades; the ice cap is expected to
disappear altogether by the year 2070. (1) Our land, air and water are
polluted with toxins and waste to the point where they can no longer
sustain life. Species of plants and animals are becoming extinct, glaciers
are melting.

As global warming continues to affect the life of our planet, the results
will be devastating. Water will become scarce in some parts of the world
while others will be flooded by rising seas as the polar ice caps melt.
Rain forests are likely to dry out and burn and parts of the world will
become much hotter even as others become much colder. Droughts will cause
starvation, oceans will become more acidic and less hospitable to life and
diseases like malaria will spread easily. (2)

Studies and reports have been issued telling us that temperatures are
rising far faster than previously thought and that we have reached the
tipping point in global warming that we had sought to avoid. There is the
grave possibility that within as little as 10 years, we will reach the
point of no return. Once that point is reached, the risk of abrupt
uncontrollable climate change is expected to increase according to the
recent report "Meeting The Climate Challenge". (3)

Each year, more and more people die unnecessarily of the cancerous impact
of our toxic behavior, of preventable starvation, of disease and because of
the misguided priorities of violence. War rages because of greed and the
desire for domination. The pandemic quest for power and honor cuts an
ever-widening swath of violence and degradation. Millions of people have
been killed, wounded, trafficked, sexually assaulted and left homeless. And
always, it is women and children who are most victimized.

It is precisely our disconnection from our ecological support systems
that allows us to commit warfare. It should therefore not surprise us that
military powers are the biggest polluters on our planet. The worst of this
pollution is the use of enormous amounts of depleted uranium in wars that
have been waged by the U.S., most recently against Afghanistan and Iraq,
imperiling the very survival of our planet.

With a half-life of 4,500,000,000 years, the impact of DU will not go
away. There is more than 1.5 million tons of radioactive Depleted Uranium
waste in the world today (700,000 or more tons of this is located in the
U.S.), and this number grows by 50,000 tons per day. In the first Gulf War
alone, the Pentagon admits to using 320 tons of uranium weapons (in
violation of international law), although Greenpeace puts the probable
amount at more than 800 megatons. (4), (5) (6),

Depleted uranium causes both radioactive and chemical damage in humans. It
is deposited in the lungs and kidneys of its victims and gives off alpha
and beta radiation which cause cell deaths and genetic mutations, resulting
in cancer in exposed individuals and genetic abnormalities in their
descendants for many generations to come (from a 1995 U.S. Army report).
(7) Women with their sensitive breast and uterine tissues and children with
their not yet fully developed immune systems are the most vulnerable. (8)

Unquestionably the most critical point that we must understand is that the
lethal impact of DU knows no boundaries. As these weapons explode, their
toxic dust is carried in the wind and invades soil, water and air
everywhere. We do not yet fully know the magnitude of the damage caused by
this pollution, but there is the very real likelihood that we have already
sown the seeds of our own demise.

It is the most perverse of ironies that the military forces that claim to
defend us are responsible for most of the violence and environmental
degradation that is destroying our world. These forces are inextricably
tied to the ethos of corporate and national empire building that values the
hoarding of resources over the common good.

This perilous and lethal greed is no longer tolerable and it is
imperative that we come together in insisting on an end to planetary
destruction and full commitment to creating a fair and sustainable future,
with full and equal voice for all, most especially those who have born the
brunt of the impact of the patriarchal irresponsibility.

Delay is no longer acceptable or possible, there is no more time.

a few years ago i bought a few of these SOMEWHERE in san francisco, and i can't find them since. they're great for houseplants because it makes it appear as though they're floating on the wall. it's an L shaped piece of steel with a movable brace that hooks into the top lip of the pot, while the bottom part of the L supports the base, and the whole thing is attached directly to the wall with just one screw. oh, and they're incredible cheap, like $4 or so, and come in two sizes.

do you guys know what i'm talking about?

i gave mine away since i was traveling, and now can't find them in any stores or online, it's like they didn't exist or anything. oh, and they didn't have a printing on them or anything stating the manufacturer, so i'm completely lost.

do these sound familiar?

if you've got an inkling, can you help me out?

Aphids and now Anthracnose

*sigh* I feel like I'm doomed. Yesterday one of my yellow squash plants out of the blue started looking sort of brown, had some leaves curling under with a handful of aphids on them, and one of the squash on it was rotting from the blossom in...

So I broke down and ran out to keep some solution to bath the plant in. I went to apply it and now ALL of my squash plants and even some of my cucumbers are covered in black aphids all under their leaves and on their buds, plus they all have signs of anthracnose. I was just going to kill the 2 plants that had it, but it seems to be all of them now.

Help what can I do?? I was finally starting to get veggies off of them and I hate to see it go to waste when I still have another several months of good growing season. We don't exactly have frost here.

help! please *sniffle*

so, is anyone planting anything interesting this fall?

i might do some bulbs indoors (i haven't tried that yet), but i think i want to do more clearing than planting outside.

Mayan Calendar Galactic Signature (revised instructions)

Hi,

I'm writing this message to all of my friends. Please copy, paste and send it to all of your friends!

Your Galactic Signature, according to the Mayan Calendar, can give you insight into the creative energies of the day you were born. If you haven't decoded your birthdate already, you will be pleasantly surprised to know your Galactic Signature!

Here is my recommendation:

1. Decode your birthdate:

http://www.icandosomething.com/mayancalendar/

Use this decoder to find your Galactic Signature, those of your friends & family, or of any date.

2. Post your Galactic Signature on the front page of your profile, in the 'interests' section. Click on your Galactic Signature, and discover the people on tribe, who share the same Glyph!

3. Do a tribe search for your Glyph, ie: Blue Hand, etc. and you will find a tribe relating to your Galactic Signature. Join it, and connect with others who share the same Glyph!

4. Go to and join the Thirteen Moon Calendar Tribe:

http://13mooncalendar.tribe.net

5. Explore:

Official Worldwide Website, which has informative educational downloads and links.

http://www.tortuga.com

This Website is very well made, and has excellent info (including the decoder listed above).

http://www.galactichardware.com

Write your name in Mayan Glyphs, and discover Natural Timekeeping.

http://www.halfmoon.org/

Thank You for your time and consideration!
troubling ivy

hi, we've got ivy growing over all the ground, front and backyard, up the fence, everywhere.

i like it on the fence, but we'd like to get rid of the groundcover and install something to make it more of a usable space.

i really don't want to use poison since we have a dog and i'd like to be able to grow other stuff, but i've heard that's really the only effective way to get rid of it.

anyone here have suggestions? i'm looking at a big project, i know, but i'll have all summer...

thanks!

Could this be the same thing that is munching on my squash/zucchini/cucumber leaves but leaving my peas/beans/peppers alone?

Hi everybody! I would like to grow some garlic. Has anyone tips where to plant it and how (dry garlic or fresh? cut the end? needs to have a green tip?)?

And I think I remeber vaguely that garlic helps other neighbour plants to get rid of some parasites... but what was it exactly?

Thank you!

Hi everbody! Just joined this tribe, the little plants on my window-shelf asked me to do so. I live in a new room since september and have had these outside-things for the first time. The early stuff is already out, now I have put in seeds for snapdragon. My favorites! But now they grow too close to each other, but are still tiny. When and how is the best time and way to separate them?

HELP! Slugs and snails are eating my century plants to death!

I swear I found over 30 slugs and snails all over my 4 baby century plants. (Cactus like plants that create one stalk w/little flowers all over once a year. I don't know the real name.) The plant created babies off itself after creating the flowers last year. I seperated the babies from the parent plant and potted them. They were fine until I put them in the ground and the slugs wiped out two of the four. The parent plant and new (unseperated) babies are ok, but the others, less than 5 feet away are wrecked.

I have a Salvia Divinorum that was doing splended as a cutting in water. Then, a couple months later I put it in a pot. Since then all the leaves that have come in turn brown. I transplanted it thinking the soil did no have enough retaining ability (because water drained out quickly) I added vermiculite and put it into a bigger pot. Now the leaves come in normal and after growing about one third of normal size begin to turn brown. Please help!

Well, I joined this tribe because I have no green thumb. I've historically been pretty good at killing houseplants. I have a few now & I would welcome any assistance you wise gardeners can offer!

My fern: Looks okay, but gets a lot of brown branches from time to time. I should cut them off, right?

Wandering Jew: this is my favorite plant. I love the colors of the leaves. But mine looks really wimpy. It needs the plant equivalent of hair mousse. From what I've seen of other WJ's, they are far bushier and just healthier-looking than my plant.

Succulent thingy: a friend of mine gave me a succulent which she called a "witches' finger" plant. Not sure if that's teh proper name. She propogated it from a plant of hers. Mine is growing pretty well, putting out new shoots from time to time. Problem is, the plant should flower and mine has shown nary a bloom.

Any suggestions on getting these green things to cooperate?
