I just discovered a rose bush amidst some unknown bushes... it has grown very tall and it's branches don't have leaves until at least 4-5 feet up. It also is not blooming... if I cut them down, will they bloom? And will it develop leaves, or will I just kill it? I live in NJ and would love to tame and nurture it.
Unsu...Wed, May 11, 2005 - 2:33 PMhi, my husband works for a nursery. you may have heard of them "HINES".. anyways..
he says YES CUT THEM BACK.. it's funny actually, if we see an overgrown rose bush he always says "ahh, they should cut that back" (our neighbors have some overgrown roses and i know it just kills him to not go over there and trim them up)..
cut them back to near the bottom, give them some vitamins (coffee grounds work good as an ADDITIVE to the soil) but good rose nutrients are best. He says to keep appx 2 feet total of stem and hack the rest off. They WILL come back, fuller and better than ever !
