I love nasturtiums but have trouble growing them. This year they are blooming - not great but at least I have flowers - but the leaves are really ugly. They turn yellow, then dry up and die. Looks really ugly. Can anyone tell me what is wrong?

Mon, July 30, 2007 - 8:11 PMWhere do you have them planted? They may not be able to push new roots if they in an area where they are competing with other plants.

Tue, July 31, 2007 - 1:35 PMsounds like water or not enough nitrogen
do the leave turn yellow at the tips or evenly though out the hole leaf?
try more water or less water if that doesn't help
add some nitrogen to the soil blood meal or bone meal works great
hope this helps -

Tue, July 31, 2007 - 9:36 PM"add some nitrogen to the soil"---this made me smile,my father always threatened to add nitrogen to my garden whenever he came by to visit. I guess that's what happens when you're an old fart drinking coffee on a long drive.
Fish emulsion like Alaska's seems like it would be helpful : www.ubcbotanicalgarden.org/foru...d.php -

Tue, July 31, 2007 - 11:13 PMI used to use miracle gro, til I discovered horse and chicken manure, vermicompost and urine. Whoosh! This stuff is good! I've got tomatoes growing like grapes. Your father would've been doing you a big favour releasing his coffee! I've got a test plant that I fed urine to for 2 days (test plant cuz I didn't believe all the reports that it's a good idea) and it's green and lush. The others are struggling a bit since running out of vermicompost.
nasturtiums don't like wet. I've bought plants in the past, had them in pots and watered them religiously. They suffered and sometimes died. This year, we're having long stints of high temps with little water, I seeded some directly into the garden and they are glorious. -

Thu, August 2, 2007 - 4:25 PMMy nasturtiums have been yellowing because we've had a wet summer here, but they perked up once the compost from the wormbin was ready. I've been sprinkling on a handful of the black gold every few weeks and they're blooming profusely. Lots of tasty flowers and buds to nibble. -

Sat, August 4, 2007 - 7:34 PMYou're right-they like drier summers. My poor geraniums look like crap this year because of all the rain. When it's drier than dry, they are blooming profusely!
