Hi. I am new to the tribe.
All of my house plants are infested with fungus gnats. I am now keeping the soil dry (only watering when the plants really need it) and it is helping only a little. Does anyone know how to get rid of these bugs without using chemicals? Any suggestions would be wonderful. Many thanks!

Re: fungus gnats
Mon, September 4, 2006 - 10:12 PMsounds silly, but the sun....find a sunny spot, place it outside first, air it out, allowing the soil to dry a bit... naturally drying...keep your eye on them...baby 'em a bit, roots are probably soggy, not a good thing, then find a warm sunny spot in your house. that should do the trick. -

Re: fungus gnats
Wed, September 6, 2006 - 11:07 PMI wouldn't recommend putting houseplants out in the sun outside, they might burn. But keeping the soil dryish is best when dealing with fungus gnats.
You can try putting a layer of sand on top of the soil in the pots to discourage them. You can use bt, bacillus thurgensis, that is organic and sold for this purpose. It's not cheap but there various products with gnat in the name. I have used bt mosquito dunks in the plant water for a bad infestation and it worked well. -

Thu, September 7, 2006 - 12:32 PMI would just repot them. Find a good soilless potting mix and replace the old soil. Sometimes soil just gets to a point where it's like mush and you have to just change it out. Plus it might give your plants a boost. -

Re: fungus gnats
Sun, September 10, 2006 - 5:21 AMI might just repot them, although I just did that a couple of months ago so I dont want to disturb the plants too much. Thankfully, the weather here in Toronto has gotten cooler with way less humidity, so the gnats have decreased. I have also been keeping the soil really dry which has also helped. But they are still there!
Thanks for the imput.

Re: fungus gnats
Wed, April 2, 2008 - 7:48 PMHere's a quick, organic fix for you; sprinkle ground cinnamon on the top soil. This kills the fungus, which in turn kills the fungus gnats. Also smells nice. :)
I've also heard of people using mosquito dunks, as Tom mentioned. Just put them in your watering cans. -

Wed, April 30, 2008 - 12:38 PMhey....
i know this isnt the best most organic solution, but if the fungus gnats get pretty bad on my plants sometimes i will use this product called "Immunox" (i think thats how it is spelled, i could be wrong though). that shit works!
